Tankless Water Heaters: Common Problems & How the Fix Them

A tankless water heater directly heats water as it flows through the device, eliminating the need for a storage tank. Recently, many homeowners have switched to tankless water heaters due to their enhanced performance and efficiency, but these devices are still susceptible to some problems. A ductless split system technician discusses some of them here:

  • Sediment buildup: If you have hard water at home, then you might need a water heater service soon. Hard water is often a nuisance because it can lead to sediment and scale buildup on plumbing fixtures. In a standard water heater, these mineral deposits can erode the tank. While a tankless water heater doesn’t have a storage tank to erode, the corrosive substances can accumulate on the heating components, causing them to malfunction or fail.
  • Gas burner problems: Gas-fueled water heaters use burners to function. From time to time, these parts can encounter problems such as dirty burners and rundown thermocouples. If you suspect that there’s an issue with your burner, call a plumbing and air conditioning expert and have them meticulously inspect your equipment to ensure that all necessary repairs are performed.
  • Broken heating elements: A tankless water heater can be powered by either natural gas, propane or electricity. Like gas-fueled water heaters, electric models can experience a number of issues with their heating elements which can cause them to break down. Fortunately, a broken or malfunctioning heating element can easily be repaired by a technician. He or she will check the circuit breaker, thermostat and other electrical connections to make sure the heating element is the only defective part.
