Where to Set Your Air Conditioner if You’re Going Away on Vacation

Homeowners should turn their air conditioning unit off before going on long vacations. But what if you’ll only be gone for a day or two? In this case, it’s recommended that you adjust the temperature and leave the thermostat  on to control indoor humidity while you’re away.

Thomas J. Fannon & Sons, your trusted HVAC repair company, elaborates further below:

Excessive Indoor Humidity Is a Problem

Trapped heat and high indoor humidity levels can damage your drywall. Not to mention, they create a damp environment that’s the perfect breeding ground for mold. Keeping your air conditioner on will help lower indoor humidity levels and prevent heat from accumulating.

What Are the Ideal Temperature Settings?

As a general rule, you should set the thermostat a few degrees lower than the average temperature outside. During the summer (when the temperature outside reaches the high 90s), we recommend setting the temperature no higher than 84 degrees. Here’s a tip: a smart thermostat will make this task easier and reduce the strain on your air conditioner. A smart thermostat can be programmed to automatically lower or increase indoor temperatures at certain times of the day. And by pairing your programmable thermostat with your smartphone, you can even adjust the temperature inside your house remotely.

Other Precautions to Take Before Going Away on Vacation

In addition to raising your thermostat, what other things do you need to do before going away on vacation?

  • Install a surge protector – A surge protector will protect your air conditioner in the event that there’s a power outage or surge while you’re away on vacation.
  • Replace the air filter – Clogged air filters increase the strain on your HVAC system. That’s why you should replace them before going on vacation.

It would also be a good idea to have your HVAC system and water heater inspected before you go out of town.
