Signs That Your Water Heater Should Be Drained

As time goes by, the bottom of your water heater will accumulate sediment, which can clog the heater and cause it to malfunction. You need to clear out the sediment in order to avoid these problems and ensure the unit continues to function normally.

Here are some telltale signs that indicate it’s time to have your water heater drained:

• You’re quickly running out of water.
• The water that’s released looks orange or rusty.
• Your water heater is making unusual noises.
• You have a leaking water heater.

How to Drain Your Water Heater

HVAC repair experts recommend the following actions for draining your water heater:

1. Turn off the main water supply to your heater.
2. Prepare the heater for shut-off. If you have an electric heater, locate the power switch on the main panel and shut it off. If you have a gas-operated heater, switch it to pilot.
3. Wait for the water to cool down before draining it. The time you’ll have to wait will depend on the size of the heater.
4. Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the heater. The hose should lead to a floor drain or directly outside.
5. Open a hot water tap near the tank to release pressure from it.
6. Open the drain valve to release the water and sediment buildup.
7. Turn the main water supply back on so that clean, fresh water can flush the tank.
8. Refill the tank and repeat this process at least once a year.
