Why Should You Shut Off Your Central Humidifier in the Summer?

A whole-house or central humidifier is a smart investment, especially if you live in a cold climate. Dry winter air can cause respiratory complications due to the lack of moisture. However, once summer comes along, it’s very important to see to it that your humidifier is turned off. Unfortunately, many homeowners tend to forget this.

In today’s blog, a leading air conditioner and humidifier expert, Thomas J. Fannon & Sons, shares the reasons behind shutting off your central humidifier in the summer.

Why Should You Turn Off Your Humidifier in the Summer?

The main purpose of your central humidifier is to infuse your indoor space with moisture. Air conditioning units do the opposite, as they’re specifically designed to dehumidify the air since indoor air tends to become very humid during the warmer months.

HVAC repair experts will tell you that if your humidifier and AC unit are running at the same time, your AC will have to work twice as hard, causing a sudden surge in your monthly electric bills and possibly even shortening your cooling unit’s service life.

How to Shut Off Your Central Humidifier

Turn the humidistat on your unit to the “off” position. You’ll often find it above the humidifier on the return air plenum.

Afterwards, turn the bypass duct damper on the humidifier to the “summer” setting or turn it off completely. If you find that your humidifier doesn’t have this function, skip this step.

Once you shut off the water supply, you can perform routine maintenance by having the water panel cleaned.
