Spring Maintenance Tips for Your Heating Oil Tank

While your oil tank may not be used much during the spring and summer, you shouldn’t wait to give it some attention until fall or winter. It’s essential to maintain your oil tank in the warmer months if you want it to be in good shape when the weather is cold and you need it most. Maintaining your heating system during the warmer months will help ensure that your oil tank delivers heat when you need it during the fall and winter seasons.

In this article, Thomas J. Fannon & Sons shares a few pointers to help you manage your oil tank in the spring.

  • Examine your heating oil tank. Inspecting your heating oil tank should be one of the first items on your spring maintenance checklist. It’s critical to inspect the tank’s external parts for evidence of damage such as corrosion, dents, stains or cracks. It’s a good idea to call us if you see any evidence of damage.
  • Ensure that your vent and fill caps are secure. Securing your vent and fill caps is another task that you shouldn’t forget. You should tighten both your vent and fill caps to keep air from leaking into your tank. This will prevent the accumulation of trash or sludge within the system.
  • Refill your heating oil tank. Warmer weather is on its way as we begin the spring season. Condensation may build naturally within your tank as the air gets more humid due to temperature fluctuations. Condensation-induced water buildup can corrode the metal inside your tank. This is also referred to as corrosion. It’s best to keep your tank full all-year-round to prevent condensation from forming.
  • Prevent moisture buildup at all costs. The high moisture content of the air might cause condensation inside your oil tank, which can lead to corrosion. If the corrosion gets out of hand, you’ll need to schedule repairs, or the oil tank may need to be replaced entirely.

When it’s time to get your heating oil tank thoroughly checked and cleaned, Thomas J. Fannon & Sons is the right contractor to call. You can reach us at (703) 549-5700 or fill out our contact form to book an appointment.
