  1. Size – More is not better! An air conditioning unit that’s not proportional to the space won’t be able to cool the space effectively. An undersized unit will struggle to cool the room, while an oversized air conditioner will not just waste energy, it will not run enough minutes of the hour to properly dehumidify. This size is measured in the tons of cooling power, or in the BTU capacity (1 ton equals 12,000 Btuh)
  2. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) –The higher the rating, the more efficient the AC unit. Each SEER point represents a 10% improvement in cost of operation over the preceding SEER rating. Most installations over 10 years old have a 10 SEER rating, while the baseline today is 14 SEER. That was state of the art not long ago! Today ratings in the twenties are available, and we can help you determine what is the best cost point for you.
  3. Refrigerant– Your older system may contain Freon (R-22) which is no longer available. A replacement of any component will require replacement of both indoor and outdoor portions.
  4. Variable Speed Technology– The advent of ECM motors, which convert AC power to DC and allow direct speed control, have brought about great advances in the HVAC industry. Now output can be matched to demand…your A/C can ‘go small’ on a day when dehumidification is important, and increase cooling power as the temperature rises.

Service may be needed if your air conditioner is not cooling the house, but first check the following:

  1. Check your filter. Poor airflow can lead to the icing up of your system. If you see ice formed around the tubing leading into the indoor section, turn the A/C off, and leave the fan on. Remove the filter and try the system again after a few hours.
  2. If the system ices up again, you are likely low on refrigerant. Call us
  3. Check the indoor unit service switch. This may be at the top of your basement stairs, or in the immediate vicinity of the indoor unit.
  4. Keep an eye on airflow to the outdoor unit. Your condenser can only discharge household heat through unobstructed airflow. We regularly see bushes, vines, dirt and debris choking the coils of outdoor units. Good housekeeping saves you money!
  5. Uneven temperatures, especially to upper rooms, are a common concern. The thermostat fan switch can be turned to ON, rather than AUTO, to provide continuous air delivery, moving air constantly. Don’t worry, fans like to run, with less energy and wear running continually than starting repeatedly. Every time the fan is off thermal dynamics take over, with warm air rising and cooler air falling.
